Two established superyacht topcoat brands
Awlgrip and Alexseal are two of the coating brands most often specified for superyacht exteriors. Awlgrip is an AkzoNobel brand2; Alexseal is made by Mankiewicz, the German coatings group9. Each offers more than one topcoat chemistry, so the useful comparison is not simply "Awlgrip vs Alexseal" but which product from each range suits the yacht, the specification and the way the yacht will be maintained. This guide summarises what the manufacturers themselves publish. It is not a substitute for their current data sheets, which change over time.
Awlgrip: Awlgrip Topcoat and Awlcraft 3000
Awlgrip Topcoat is described by Awlgrip as a premium polyurethane high-gloss finish with excellent chemical resistance and hardness and outstanding distinction of image (DOI)1,2. Its data sheets describe a two-component, polyester-based, linear aliphatic polyurethane with long-lasting gloss and colour retention, and call it a low-maintenance coating with the instruction: do not wax, buff, compound or polish3. Awlgrip lists spray, brush and roller application1.
Awlcraft 3000 is Awlgrip's acrylic urethane alternative. Awlgrip describes it as providing a buffable, high-gloss finish that is fast-drying and easy to apply, for spray application only4,5, and describes it as a buffable, polishable and repairable finish, the next generation of its acrylic urethane topcoats with enhanced colour technology6. In practice, "Awlgrip" is often used loosely for both products, so it is worth confirming which one is actually specified.
Alexseal: Premium Topcoat 501, Topcoat X and High Solid BC/CC
Alexseal Premium Topcoat 501 is a two-component, polyurethane-based coating with a high-gloss wet look and superior DOI, developed specifically for the yacht industry and highly resistant to UV, salt water, abrasion and fuel7,8. Alexseal's own comparison sheet positions it for larger yachts, citing best overspray uptake, repairability and excellent flow9. A dedicated Blending Solvent is offered for spot repairs, softening the old coating so that new and old layers blend into a seamless repair10, and the care guide allows occasional light buffing by an experienced applicator11.
The same comparison sheet lists Acrylic Topcoat X as very easy to polish and repair and suited to smaller and medium-sized projects, and the polyester-based High Solid BC/CC base coat/clear coat system for large areas and yachts that need a highly durable finish9.
Side by side, from the manufacturers' data
| Product | Chemistry (as published) | Repair and buffing (as published) | Positioning (as published) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awlgrip Topcoat | Polyester-based linear aliphatic polyurethane3 | "Do not wax, buff, compound or polish"3 | Chemical resistance, hardness, high DOI1,2 |
| Awlcraft 3000 | Acrylic urethane6 | Buffable, polishable, repairable4,6 | Fast drying, easy to apply; spray only5 |
| Alexseal Premium Topcoat 501 | Two-component polyurethane8 | Repairable with Blending Solvent; light buffing allowed10,11 | Larger yachts; overspray uptake; flow9 |
| Alexseal Topcoat X | Acrylic urethane9 | Very easy to polish and repair9 | Smaller and medium-sized projects9 |
| Alexseal High Solid BC/CC | Polyester-based base coat/clear coat9 | Rated lowest of the three for polishability9 | Large areas; high durability9 |
How to choose for your yacht
- The existing system. On a refit, compatibility with what is already on the yacht, and how far it will be removed, often narrows the choice. Check it against the manufacturer's system guidance.
- Repairability on board. If the crew and yard will need to make invisible spot repairs during the season, weigh the repair and buffing guidance above carefully.
- Specification and warranty. Builders, owners' representatives and manufacturers may require a specific system and an approved process.
- Colour and finish. Dark hulls, metallics and clear-coated finishes place more demands on fairing, preparation and application control.
- Environment. Heat and humidity in Southeast Asia make covered space, recorded application conditions and correct reducer selection critical whichever system you choose.
Our own project record includes both brands: Awlgrip on the current 76m hull at ST Marine Engineering and on full repaints such as S/Y Douce France, and Alexseal on three 33 m newbuilds in Vietnam and on finishing work in Bangkok, alongside International, Hempel and Jotun systems. Frequently asked questions
Can an Awlgrip Topcoat finish be buffed?
Awlgrip's product data sheet for Awlgrip Topcoat describes it as a low-maintenance coating and states: do not wax, buff, compound or polish. Awlgrip positions Awlcraft 3000 as its buffable, repairable topcoat.
Is Alexseal repairable?
Alexseal describes Premium Topcoat 501 as offering repairability, supported by a dedicated Blending Solvent for seamless spot repairs, and its care guide allows light buffing by an experienced applicator.
Which is better for a superyacht, Awlgrip or Alexseal?
Neither is better in every case. The right choice depends on the yacht's existing system, the builder's or owner's specification, how important on-board repairability is, the colour and finish, and the application environment. Always follow the manufacturer's current data sheets.
Do you apply both systems?
Yes. Our project record includes Awlgrip systems, for example on the current 76m hull in Singapore, and Alexseal systems, for example on three 33 m newbuilds in Vietnam, as well as International, Hempel and Jotun systems.
